Brownsburg’s roots reach back to 1834 when a settler named William Harris platted a community he called “Harrisburgh.” The name was short-lived, however, when it was renamed for one of its earliest settlers, James B. Brown. The town was officially founded in 1836 when a post office opened, and was incorporated in 1848. Brownsburg stayed a small, quiet community until the 1990s when suburban growth exploded the population by over 90%.
Brownsburg is located only a few minutes’ drive west of Indianapolis, and is also very close to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indianapolis International Airport. With its heavy growth in the past several years, the community has devoted much effort into intelligent planning and development.
In addition to all of the attractions of Indianapolis only a few miles away, Brownsburg offers residents its own share of diverse shops and restaurants, ranging from large chains to small, locally owned businesses. Brownsburg also has three golf courses located within 10 minutes of the town center, as well as four municipal parks within close proximity.
The town also retains its small-town spirit by hosting a variety of community events. The end of the year brings the Christmas Under the Stars event, a holiday parade followed by a lighted display in Arbuckle Acres Park.
